Thordarson T-30W08A 6L6 Tube Amplifier (#THOR)
[THOR] $299.00
Here is a very nice Thordarson vacuum tube amplifier.
This is the desirable but hard to find T-30W08A amplifier. The serial number is 17400.
The amplifier is configured as a 6L6 based class A amplifier capable of 8 watts output. The tubes used are two 6SJ7, a 6L6G, and a 5Y3G.
This Thordarson amplifier has been restored and is in very good working condition.
This amplifier was used for many years as a general purpose portable amplifier. It is in very good condition considering the age and use of this amplifier. There is some very minor surface rust and paint chips in only a few places.
Amazingly, it still has the original power cord, which is still in good condition. It is still flexible and has no kinks, cracks or breaks.
The amplifier has the optional perforated steel cover with a handle. The rugged all steel construction, cover and handle makes this amplifier perfect for use as a portable guitar amplifier.
Restoration work, previous modifications and physical description:
All electrolytics have been replaced with new capacitors of the same size and rating with the following exceptions.
The dual 8mfd 450V electrolytic box capacitor was replaced with two 10mfd 450V tubular electrolytics. The two 10mfd 450V sections of the can electrolytic were replaced with two 20mfd 450V tubular electrolytics. The 20mfd 25V section of the can electrolytic was replaced with a 25mfd 25V tubular electrolytic. The remaining two 25mfd 25V electrolytics were replaced with new 25mfd 25V electrolytics. The main effect of the slightly increased size of the electrolytics is the reduction of the residual hum that was present in this amplifier. The response characteristics of the amplifier are unchanged from when it was new.
The can electrolytic is still physically in place to retain the original look, but it is no longer connected to the circuits. The new tubular electrolytics that replaced it are installed inside the chassis.
All the wax paper capacitors have been replaced with new sealed capacitors of the same size and rating.
Five of the resistors which had changed with age were replaced (the rest are still good).
The existing tubes are still in excellant condition so replacement was not required.
The metal and felt feet are worn but still functional.
This amplifier was slightly modified from the original at some time in the past. Specifically, an RCA jack was installed for the phono input instead of using the screw terminal strip (this is a better configuration as it matches modern connections).
The phono screw strip was then wired into the speaker plug jack to pick off the 8 ohm speaker output. This makes connecting a speaker much easier since you don't have to have the special speaker plug, or try to figure out which connections are for the 8 ohm output.
Another addition made was to add a high impedence three pin screw-on microphone connector. The jack is connected to the existing microphone 1/4 inch phone jack.
Included with this amplifier is a hand drawn schematic showing the parts, including the modifications that were made to this amplifier.
Also included with this amplifier is a plastic bag with all the parts that were replaced during restoration so that you can see what was replaced.
When using this amplifier, be sure to set the controls for any unused input to zero. If you are not going to be using the microphone input at all, you can remove the microphone amplifer tube (6SJ7 tube with shield) from the amplifier.
This amplifier uses four tubes. Condition and test results are listed below.
6SJ7GT, Sharp cutoff pentode, Sylvania, 100% emission, with Sylvania foil on paper tube shield (mic amplifier tube)
6SJ7GT, Sharp cutoff pentode, Hytron, 100% emission (phono amplifier tube)
6L6G, Beam Power Amplifier, Sylvania, 100% emission (output tube)
5Y3G, Full wave rectifier, Sylvania, 100%/100% emission (rectifier tube)
Purchasing the Thordarson amplifer is easy.
